DEPARTMENT OF Basic Science and Humanities

Department profile

A strong foundation in basic science and humanities will definitely provide the students with a suitable platform for the development of analytical skills and attainment of professional competence. Under the leadership of Ms. Rani M Kurup, the Department of Basic Science & Humanities of SJCET provides all our students superb exposure in various disciplines such as Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Engineering chemistry, Soft skills, Economics, Ethics. We do our best to inculcate in our students a natural flair for engineering and technology.

The Basic Science & Humanities Department also co-ordinates various activities to induce the best humane values through moral classes, guidance and counseling sessions, yoga and meditation. Students are encouraged to get training in various sports and games. To sharpen the communication and language skills the department maintains a top-class Multi-media Language lab. Competent, dedicated and experienced personnel of Science & Humanities department play a vital role in moulding students to become excellent engineers.

Message from the HoD

Our department is dedicated to providing a strong foundation in the Basic Sciences and Humanities, which are essential for the holistic development of engineering students. We are proud to have a team of eight highly qualified and passionate faculty members who are committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service.

Our courses are designed to enhance critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills, thereby equipping our students with the essential tools needed to excel in their engineering careers and beyond. We believe that a solid grounding in the basic sciences and humanities not only complements technical education but also fosters a well-rounded, informed, and socially responsible engineer.

In our department, we strive to create a dynamic and supportive learning environment. We encourage our students to engage actively in their learning journey, participate in interdisciplinary research, and take advantage of the numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth

By integrating these advanced technologies into our curriculum, we empower our graduates to compete with fellow engineers and secure jobs that align with their skill sets. Moreover, we have a dedicated placement cell that assists our students in finding suitable employment upon graduation.
The backbone of our department lies in our experienced and committed faculty members. Our faculty members possess extensive knowledge and are deeply passionate about imparting it to the next generation of civil engineers. Faculty members also participate in consultancy projects. Department undertakes consultancy activities through the Centre for Research Innovation and Consultancy (C-RIC). Students are participating in these consultancy projects and get experienced to complexities of engineering projects.
Students attend invited talks from Industry professionals, seminars and workshops/ Student chapters of professional bodies are working effectively in the department with active student participation
In conclusion, our curriculum, teaching and learning processes in line with Outcome Based Education (OBE) requirements, not only impart knowledge and technical skills but also instill in our students the right attitude towards their work— a socially committed and ethical approach that aligns with the principles of sustainable development goals. We aim to shape well-rounded individuals who can contribute meaningfully to society.
PSO1: Professional Skills –Solve problems in construction, structural, project management, hydraulics, geotechnical, transportation and environmental disciplines of civil engineering
PSO2: Design & Development skills – Ability to effectively understand and implement the civil engineering skills, construction methodology, project management and software skills.
